Langkawi Island, once labeled as the Jewel of Kedah is situated off the shores of Kedah, one of the northern states in Peninsular Malaysia. The island is in fact an archipelago of 99 islands and another five islands resurfaces during low tide. Among the many islands in Langkawi, only two of them are inhibited by men.
The biggest inhibited island in the area is no other than Langkawi, with 478.5 sq. kilometers and Kuah as its biggest town with 45,000 number of population and the other one being Tuba Island. The uninhibited ones are mainly rocky surface, some divided only by narrow canals that can only be crossed by small boats.

The island has many fabulous myths and legend has it that the island was once a land of the pirates, living and feasting on boats. Langkawi Island also boasts the tales of ogres, giant birds, princesses, warriors and romance are other myths that have been with the locals’ wonderful heritage brought down from their ancestors. The Langkawi’s Underwater World is the marine aquarium that was built to accommodate 5,000 species of aquatic life. The Underwater World also housed a few numbers of mammals and reptile species. For visitors who just hopped off of the ferry in Kuah, a giant eagle statue at the Eagle Square will be greeting them. The square is a really greatplace to take a stroll and has magnificent scenery, suitable for taking pictures.

Shopping addicts will also find their heaven on earth in Langkawi Island as it offers duty-free shopping on a variety of local and imported goods. The shopping complex offers a wide range of items from perfume, cosmetics, sports gear, leather products, confectionary, cigarettes and liquor at very cheap price.
Visitors only allowed bringing back a carton and a bottle of liquor to the mainland only after staying at least 48 hours in Langkawi Island to avoid item trafficking illegally.

The main take-off points by ferry to Langkawi Island are located in Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis. Travelling by road from Kuala Lumpur tourist can take the PLUS Highway which takes about six hours and another one hour drive to Kuala Perlis. There is parking bays facility at both take-off points made available to vehicles.
If you are planning to travel by air, you can get a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi Island Airport in Padang Masirat, about 20 minutes away from Kuah. Flight services are provided by Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia on a daily basis and five times a week respectively.
